Febuary issue. “Crash Detectives”
I shot this story before my last trip to Afghanistan. A plane crashed just south of Pittsburg, PA and I was flown in (ironic huh) to shoot the story.
This is a great story about the NTSB ( National Transportation Safety Board ). Written by an amazing write and great friend of mine, Arianne Cohen, check out her work here: www.ariannecohen.com/

Added bonus: the tick I found on my leg 2 days later.
I was just forwarded this letter regarding the story:
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank your publication for February’s feature, “Crash Detectives,” by Arianne Cohen, about the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation of a plane crash in rural Pennsylvania this past October. My aunt, Elaine Heston, was one of the two victims of that crash.
While reading the article and seeing Mr. Hunt’s photographs was emotionally difficult, we are grateful for his and Miss Cohen’s sensitive treatment of the more graphic aspects of the investigation. Miss Cohen did an excellent job conveying the challenges investigators face in each case, and their passion to make sure that the investigation is thorough. Your staff displayed the professionalism one would expect from a publication like Popular Mechanics. In addition, it is a great comfort to us to know that investigators like Mr. Cox and Miss Andrews are so dedicated to finding out what happened and to help prevent it from happening again.
My aunt loved to fly. And, more than that, she loved teaching others to learn how to experience that joy on their own. She had recently become a licensed aviation mechanic and would have appreciated the technical element of the article. She is missed greatly.
With deepest thanks,
The Heston Family
