Last night I went to the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards 2006 . I photographed students from Dartmouth College for the current issue. They designed a gyroscope wheel to help make bikes more stable for kids trying to learn how to ride. The most impressive winner was Jock Brandis, a TV and movie engineer in North Carolina, who developed an inexpensive, beyond easy-to-make peanut sheller .

Having just taught my son to ride a bike, which for anyone who has done it will know is no easy feat, this invention looks great. How does it work?

it spins and spins and helps hold the bikes center of gravity so the wheel “rights” its self if it starts to drift off track.
